My stats have told me that it’s the time of year when people start searching for help buying lapers Christmas presents.
We’re a funny bunch aren’t we? We can always think of new things to buy for our larp wardrobes and kit, but it’s incredibly hard for anyone to actually buy us gifts if they’re not actually a larper too. While one solution would be to cull your social circle to only include larpers, perhaps a better idea would be to make a wishlist and give them a few ideas!
With that in mind here’s a roundup of some of my favourite things on Etsy at the moment to give you a few ideas for your wishlist, or for those who are trying to buy for a difficult larper…
Larp is a hobby that is full of books. Well, mine is anyway. So I’m going to kick off this list with one of the favourite accessories I’ve ever bought for my characters – book plates. Every book owned by one of my characters has a book plate drawn by Linette from Anachronalia pasted into the front of it. Most of them have curses on, just to warn all the other characters to keep their hands off my books. They make great gifts too – they’re very reasonably priced and would be a lovely thing to give to people for Christmas, or you could even gift sets of them in character! Linette makes custom books too. If you wanted a journal made for someone as a gift with their characters house symbol on the front I’d sure that she would oblige!
There’s some universal truths in every hobby. In LARP I think one of them is that you can never own enough cloak pins. Especially fancy ones. Cloak pins can be a reasonably priced but treasured gift for most larpers who enjoy historical or fantasy style games. They easily turn any blanket into something warm to wear round a campfire in the winter. Back In The Day make a few different designs of cloak pins, including this gorgeous pin with leaves would be suitable for a huge variety of characters.
Got a friend who likes playing archer characters? Maybe you’re an archer yourself. A beautiful handmade quiver is something that most people never quite get round to buying after the regular expense of new arrows, so this lovely one from Manticore Creations fits the bill as a gift. Much nicer than just shoving them all in a bag.
And if you can’t afford a full size quiver for the archer in your life, this might be the cutest pencil case you’ll ever see. It is also from Manticore Creations and is a scaled down replica of the larger cloth arrow bags that are loved by both reenactors and larpers.
I don’t think that you can have too many notebooks – either in life or in LARP. Getting a handmade notebook is such a great idea, old fashioned binding techniques will fit into almost any genre of game. These gorgeous notebooks are made here in the UK and they’re wonderful. I have several.
Here’s another one for the forst elf types. A small belt pouch holder for potion bottles with a fabulous leaf pattern engraved into the leather on the outside. It’s made by Leatherworks Design who has some lovely things in their Etsy shop, both for LARP and for everyday use!
If you’ve got a big spender in your life then this might be the piece of kit that you’re looking for. If you’ve never seen Wyrmwick Creations armour in person you should know that it’s remarkable stuff. It’s made of lightweight polyurethane that allows them to make incredible armour designs like this nightmarish Cthulu set of pauldrons. They’re one of the few companies making semi off-the-shelf armour for women too!
Last, but certainly not least, is this wand thigh holster for all those who head off to wizard school for their larping fix. Outcast Props have really outdone themselves here, with a holster that will hold not only your wand, but your potion bottle too! Wizard school larps are gaining popularity all the time so if you’re a larper I’m fairly sure that you know someone who would absolutely love this as a gift. I certainly do.
If none of these quite fit, take a look at the Etsy gift guide for personalised gifts. Theres lots of other options you could spring for – from custom character portraits to laser engraved wooden boxes. Lots of these options would be suitable for larpers to use as their characters!
