I hear there’s a party going on next weekend in The League at Empire. It’s the Festival of the Reaper, an excuse to dress up in fashionable finery and wear beautiful masks while roleplaying the night away.
Earlier this year in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art I came across this gorgeous painting. There seems to be an inordinate amount of Leaguers on my Facebook friends list (and in the costume groups) which meant that I couldn’t help noticing the detail on this gentleman’s shoes. Just look at the slashing! On his shoes! Do any Leaguers have slashed fabric shoes yet? I think this should happen! Also the fabulous hats – more LARPers should wear fabulous hats.
The painter is Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta and it was painted between 1875-78. Although they’re almost certainly French subjects at a party, I still love the mood of another nation visiting the League’s festival. I also suspect that I now require a corset with stuffed pom-poms on – I have no idea where I’d wear such a thing, but I need it! Isn’t that always the way with costume?
If you’re the first Leaguer to create some amazing slashed shoes, please give me a shout so that I can feature them on the blog!
